Learning to be a Criticalist

Where are you from?
I am from San Antonio, Texas.

What academic degrees have you earned?·   
I received my B.S. in 2004, M.S. in 2007 and D.V.M. in 2011 from Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama.

What attracted you to Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine?· 
I have always wanted to be a criticalist. I have been an emergency room doctor for the past decade and wish to further my career.

What have you been surprised to learn during your tenure here (about veterinary medicine, Cummings School, or yourself)? 
I am so surprised by how far veterinary medicine has come since leaving school. Even though I tried to keep up with current literature, seeing it in action is impressive.

What do you hope to do after completing your time at Cummings School?· 
I am excited to return to my previous hospital and help elevate our medicine and ability to provide exceptional care. I also want to work with interns and students to continue teaching future generations of veterinarians.

Can you share an experience from your time at Cummings School that stands out to you—as a patient, case, owner, faculty member, etc.?· 
I am always so impressed by the trauma cases and how fast everyone springs into action from emergency and critical care, diagnostic imaging, and surgery.

What brings you joy professionally?
The best part of my job is watching the students connect what they are being taught in class to what actually happens on the clinic floor because I know they  will be able to go out and help so many pets.

Is there anything else you would like to share?
Residency is way more challenging than I thought it would be, professionally and personally, but I know I would never be half as successful if I weren’t here at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. It’s the right place and right time for me.
