Establishing a reference range for postprandial triglyceride concentrations in healthy adult dogs
Status: Recruiting
Species: Dog
Veterinary Speciality: Internal Medicine
Description
The purpose of the study is to determine a reference range for post-meal triglyceride concentration in healthy dogs across various body condition scores, ages, and breed fed a non-standardized diet.
Inclusion Criteria
Species: Canine
Sex: male or female, intact or spayed
Age Range: 3 to 12 years of age
Weight Range: at least 2 kg
UPDATE: To complete the study, we are now only looking for ideal weight older dogs (9-12 years old) and overweight dogs of any age (3-12 years).
Exclusion Criteria
Breeds with recognized primary hyperlipidemias will be excluded from the trial (Miniature Schnauzers, Beagles, Shetland Sheepdogs, Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, Briards, Rough-coated Collies, and Great Pyrenees).
Dogs receiving glucocorticoids, NSAIDs, or drugs and supplements recognized to affect lipid metabolism such as statins, fibrates, niacin, and omega 3 fatty acids will be excluded from the study.
Enrolled dogs should be healthy and not receiving treatment for any conditions. Your dog’s results may be excluded if they are found to have significant bloodwork abnormalities. We will notify you of lab work results and any concerns identified.
Client Benefits
The study will cover the cost of blood work (complete blood count, chemistry) and urinalysis. Your pet’s participation will also allow us to gain information which will help in evaluating other dogs for high triglyceride concentrations. You understand that your animal’s participation in this study may not alleviate or cure his/her ailment.
Sample or Data Requirements
If you decide to participate in this study, your dog will have 10 mls (approximately two teaspoons) of blood drawn with three blood draws over a 6-hour period. We will also attempt to get voided urine, but may obtain a sample using a needle if necessary. Once the blood is drawn, your dog’s participation in the study will have ended.
